In Conversation with Elie Hirschfeld: 'Scenes of New York City'

The real estate developer, philanthropist and art collector shares his excitement and love for the collection he donated to the New York Historical Society, which depicts the city and its landmarks he cherishes deeply.

Elie Hirschfeld, president of Hirschfeld Properties, a leading real-estate development firm in New York City, and his wife, Sarah, recently donated their personal art collection to the New-York Historical Society. Their 130-piece collection, Scenes of New York City, includes 113 works by 82 artists who are not currently represented in the Historical Society’s collection. A designated space, The Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld Gallery, Scenes of New York City, will open in a large-scale exhibition in the fall of 2021, and continue to showcase a rotation of their pieces for the foreseeable future. Their works date from the year 1818 to the 21st-century and are all centered around New York City’s defining landmarks, from buildings, bridges and parks, to the art movements that shaped the city’s culture.
